The PhD Training Group “Critical Junctures of Globalization” at the University of Leipzig invites applications for grants. The programme is financed by the German Research Council (DFG). It analyses processes of globalisation in terms of their critical junctures. These are historical spaces, moments and arenas of globalisation in which spatial orders (or territorial regimes) are contested and replaced by new ones. Critical junctures of globalisation are characterised by dialectic processes of de-territorialization and re-territorialization and concomitant processes of identity formation. They indicate specific problems, but also produce specific resources for social and cultural action.

As of April 1, 2007 six grants (ca. €1,000 per month) will be available. Candidates will be supported for a maximum of three years. Applicants should have an excellent Diploma, Magister or Master degree which qualifies for studies in doctoral programmes and a PhD topic which is related to this particular programme. They are expected to be below the age of 28.

Applications should include:
- a certified copy of the Diploma, Magister or Master degree, including completed and official certificates and transcripts of previous university studies (academic records which are not in German or in English must be accompanied by English translations);
- a research proposal in which an innovative project which falls into one of the three research areas of the programme is outlined (for details see www.uni-leipzig.de/zhs/bruchzonen). This proposal of not more than 3,500 words should include a brief summary of the international state of the art on the topic and a working plan. It should indicate how the project can be completed within a maximum of three years. A summary of 15 lines should be added;
- a curriculum vitae;
- two references from academic referees (in sealed envelopes).

Successful applicants are expected to take residence in Leipzig, to participate in a course programme and to do field research. Travel and family grants are paid according to DFG guidelines. Non-German applications are particularly welcome.

The University of Leipzig is an equal opportunity employer. Women are encouraged to apply. Severely challenged persons with the same occupational aptitude will be privileged.

Please send applications until February 8, 2007 to the co-ordinator of the programme:
